This workshop is an opportunity for Florence-area nonprofit staff, board, and volunteers to learn about valuable tools and resources, and connect with other community members. Join us for a two-part workshop to dive into how boards can come together and work productively to advance their mission both now and in future years.
This event is hosted by the Nonprofit Association of Oregon and made possible with support from Siuslaw Vision and The Ford Family Foundation.
Agenda:
10:00 – 10:30 AM: Check-in & coffee/tea
10:30 – 12:00 PM: Session 1
12:00 – 1:00 PM: Lunch (included) and networking
1:00 – 2:30 PM: Session 2
Session 1: Effective Board Management
Meaningful board service involves more than just attending meetings; a truly engaged board is one whose understanding of their individual and collective roles matches their passion for and dedication to your mission. Attendees will learn:
- Roles, responsibilities, and liabilities of the individual and the board as a collective
- The typical structure of a nonprofit board, including officer positions and key policies
- How to incorporate tools for effective collaboration between Board Chair and Executive Director (if you have one!)
- Strategies for developing and using a board workplan, including the use of committees to accomplish board work
- Techniques for running effective board and committee meeting
Session 2: Governance Plans: A Tool for Board Success and Transitions
This session focuses on exploring the benefits of a Board Governance Plan that clearly communicates the expectations, responsibilities, and protocols for all those involved in the governance function of a nonprofit. A Board Governance Plan is an opportunity for board members to define their culture, agree on how they will work together, set up how they will measure their success, establish a recruitment and orientation process, and calendar the work they need to do over the course of a year. A Board Governance Plan removes the guesswork on how the board functions and creates a plan for the board’s work that persists through board leadership changes.
